3 Common Misconceptions About Hospice Care

3 Common Misconceptions About Hospice Care

Because hospice is connected with end-of-life illnesses, many misconceptions have associated with it. As a trusted provider of hospice care in Los Angeles County, California, we want to correct some misunderstandings.

  1. Hospice is only for dying patients

Having a terminal illness is not similar to giving up. Hospice care is provided to assist patients to live their lives to the fullest. Whether they have an injury, chronic illness, or end-of-life condition, the length or shortness of time doesn’t matter; what matters are the comfort, care, and fulfillment they’ll experience.

  2. Hospice is only provided in facilities

Though many hospice care services are provided in the hospital, nursing homes, and other facilities, they can still be delivered at home. According to the American Hospice Organization, around 70% of hospice is delivered at home. In connection to that, a hospice in Burbank, California is available anywhere the patient calls home.

  3. Hospice is only for cancer patients

While hospice patients are commonly dealing with cancer, the care services are still provided to patients with lung disease, cardiovascular disease, HIV or AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. Based on the estimates of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, about 50% of hospice patients are non-cancer related.
